The following story is reflective of a real-life customer situation that we have seen and helped. We have changed the name, exact events and used photos of actors in order to maintain confidentiality.
When Sharon’s partner died suddenly her, and her children’s lives were turned upside down. She found it difficult to get through the day let alone keep on top of her bills.
Sharon had been a Drafty customer for several years and had always repaid regularly. She lost her partner unexpectedly leaving her a widow with two young children and turning her world upside down. With the shock of her circumstances, and her grief, her children were the main focus. Sharon didn’t make her repayments and fell behind not only with Drafty but some of her other creditors too.
When we contacted Sharon, we discovered what was happening. We quickly realised that right now wasn’t the right time to talk about finances. We signposted specialist organisations that could provide support. We agreed to place things on hold for a period of 2 months. This gave Sharon some time to process what had happened and to focus on her family.
After the 2-month period had come to an end she contacted us to discuss her options. Sharon was not able to resume her normal monthly payments. We realised how hard things were for Sharon. We went through her income & expenditure details with her. We were able to work out an affordable solution.
Together we agreed to set up a repayment plan to reduce her payments and help her adjust to her new financial position. We also explained what impact this would have on her credit rating.
Grieving and trauma can make it difficult to reach out and ask for help. We understand this and will listen with empathy and no judgement. We’re here to help. We will work together with you to find the right solution. We’ll advise you where to find free and independent help.
Please think carefully about whether Drafty is the right solution for you. This is even more important if you're in financial difficulty. If we don't think you can afford to repay your credit, we won't be able to approve you. We'll look at your current finances and credit history before we decide whether to give you credit. Failure to repay could impact your credit file.
